Are you serious, Apple? The foldable iPhone Duo is coming in these colors?

Update from September 9, 2026:

Now that the Apple event has taken place, it turns out that Apple managed to keep a lot under wraps and surprised us with things that no one thought were going to happen. Read all about how Apple surpassed my expectations with the iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Duo.

Original article from September 9, 2026 follows below:

The foldable iPhone — which is now all but confirmed to be named the iPhone Duo — will be announced in less than six hours from now. Apple has taken its sweet time entering the foldable smartphone market, and Apple fans have waited far longer than they should have had to.

Which is why it’s all the more infuriating that, apparently, the iPhone Duo is following the same dumb trend that started with the iPhone 17 Pro. A trend that the iPhone 18 Pro is adopting as well, even though numerous Apple users wish that it wouldn’t.

No black color option

Yep, that’s right. According to industry insider Mark Gurman, the foldable iPhone Duo will not be available in a black color option. Instead, it will give you a choice between dark blue and white.

Famously, the iPhone 17 Pro also didn’t have a black color option, despite that being perhaps the most popular color of choice for smartphone users around the world. The iPhone 18 Pro, which does come in the excellent Dark Cherry color to its credit, is also apparently not coming in a black option.

But Apple doesn’t really commit to this dumb trend, either. Its phones still feature some very dark color option to appeal to the subset of the consumer base that wants black phones. The iPhone 17 Pro had “Deep Blue” and the iPhone 18 Pro will also feature some variant of dark gray according to leaked images.

Either commit to the bit or give the people what they want, Apple.

Some last-minute catching up for the foldable iPhone Duo:

Why isn’t there a black foldable iPhone Duo?

Personally, I don’t understand why Apple is refusing to give us black color options for its top-of-the-line smartphones. I know that people have mocked the company in the past for trying to be needlessly different, but this seems like a much more egregious example than usual to me.

It’s like Apple wants to move away from traditional smartphone colors. Okay, sure, but they’re traditional colors for a reason.

People love black smartphones, me included. Don’t force us to choose from shades that might not appeal to us in the slightest just so you can be different from the competition, Apple!

What’s also ridiculous is that this is the company’s first foldable flagship, something that has been in the works for years and years. To not offer it in such a popular color option runs the risk of people liking the form factor and then choosing an alternative like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 instead.

If you stick strictly to black smartphones — like I do, though Dark Cherry tempts me — your only choices are between the base iPhone 18, the iPhone Air 2, and the iPhone 18e. All three of these phones are reportedly coming out next year, and none of them will deliver the high-end flagship experience you might be craving.

It’s not all bad, though. The pricing’s decent

Although, I must admit, the pricing for the foldable iPhone Duo is a big mark in its favor. If Gurman’s report is accurate, and it likely is given how close to launch we are, then the phone is so much more affordable than all of the previous reports would have had us believe.

I mean, a $2,000 starting price for a foldable smartphone from Apple? In this economy? It’s mind-blowing. Apparently, Apple is absorbing a lot of the rising memory costs for now so that it can get a foothold in the foldable market.

That’s some seriously good business sense and is going to help propel the iPhone Duo to insane heights, in my opinion. It might not be the perfect foldable that Apple wanted to make, and it might not come in arguably the most popular color for smartphones, but I expect we’ll see it top charts for the next year regardless.
