According to a survey taken by Ipsos Reid, Canadian manufacturer RIM is doing much better in its home country than almost everywhere else in the world. The BlackBerry manufacturer has a 27% market share in the country, according to the survey, trailing only the 29% belonging to Apple. Samsung's position in the survey is unknown, but according to Ipsos, all Android manufacturers together would lead the pack with 36% of the Canadian  mobile device market. Of that total, Samsung has the top market share among Android producers at 18% of all Android mobile devices.

Smartphone penetration is now at 40% in Canada according to Ipsos Reid, the company that surveyed 40,000 Canadians for the report. Meanwhile, tablets have been picking up steam in the country. In January 2011, 3% of Canadians owned one, according to the survey, and that figure is now up to 15% as of last month. The Apple iPad is the dominant tablet in Canada with a 42% slice of the pie. RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook is a respectable, but distant runner-up owning 19% of the tablet market in Canada. In third is Samsung's GALAXY Tab line of tablets, holding 9% of the Canadian tablet market. That figure has doubled since January 2011. The fourth and fifth top Canadian tablet manufacturers are Acer and ASUS with 6% and 4% of the market respectively.
