Sergey Brin takes to Google+ to clarify his statements regarding Facebook, Apple
Apparently Sergey Brin wants to clarify his position on Facebook and Apple after reading secondary coverage across the web on his interview with The Guardian. As we reported a few days ago, Brin said he felt the greatest threat to Internet freedom was censorship and restricted use imposed by various governments around the world such as China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Additionally, we touched on the fact that Brin also cited walled gardens such as Facebook and the Apple App Store as causes of stifled innovation and web balkanization.
Brin took to his Google+ account to clarify a few things. First, he wants to reaffirm his position that the greatest threat to Internet freedom is “government filtering of political dissent.” He wants to make it clear that the issues he pointed out involving Facebook and Apple are no where near as concerning as government censorship.
He goes on to say,

“I have always admired Apple’s products. In fact, I am writing this post on an Imac [sic] and using an Apple keyboard I have cherished for the past seven years. Likewise, Facebook has helped to connect hundreds of millions of people, has been a key tool for political expression and has been instrumental to the Arab Spring. Both have made key contributions to the free flow of information around the world.”
